How often should you post on Instagram per week? What 2 million posts say

By the Nexora team · Published

Short answer

For most accounts, 3 to 5 feed posts a week is the best-supported starting point: a Buffer analysis of more than 2 million posts found that moving from 1–2 to 3–5 a week gives about 12% more reach per post. Posting more (6–9 or 10+) keeps adding followers, with diminishing returns. Pick the number you can sustain with good quality every week.

What the Buffer analysis found

Buffer, a social media scheduling tool, analyzed more than 2 million posts from more than 100,000 Instagram accounts (published in August 2025). It counted only feed posts (photos, Reels and carousels); Stories were left out. It compared weeks with different numbers of posts against weeks with no posts:

Increase in follower growth rate, by posts per week (Buffer)
Posts per weekIncrease in follower growth rate
1–2+0.12%
3–5+0.26%
6–9+0.44%
10 or more+0.66%

On reach per post, the biggest improvement comes when moving from 1–2 to 3–5 a week: about 12% more. With 6–9 posts, reach per post rises about 18%, and with 10 or more about 24%, compared with 1–2 a week.

How to read this data for your business

  • Posting more is associated with more growth, but with diminishing returns: Buffer recommends 3 to 5 as the sweet spot to gain reach and growth without burning out or lowering quality.
  • It is an analysis of observed data, not an experiment: it shows associations. Accounts that post more may also have more resources or better content.
  • Buffer sells a scheduling tool, so treat the figure as a reference and test it on your own account.
  • Consistency matters more than the exact number: posting 3 times a week every week beats 7 times in one week and nothing in the next ones.

How do I pick my number?

  1. Start with 3 posts a week if you are just starting or have little time.
  2. Move up to 4 or 5 when you can keep the quality up without it becoming a burden.
  3. Every month, check in your account’s insights which posts had the most reach and repeat that kind of content.
